Day Trip to Martha’s Vineyard

Lets be honest… on a good beach day there really isn’t a reason to leave the sandy shores of Old Silver Beach. Because why would you want to?

BUT if you feel the need to adventure beyond our beautiful shores, the good news is that Sea Crest is conveniently located just a short drive from the Woods Hole ferries, making island-hopping to Martha’s Vineyard a breeze! All you need to do before setting sail is to check the Steamship Authority and the Falmouth-Edgartown ferry schedules, then book your trip and escape from shore!

Once you are on island, these is so much to do and see, starting with:

There are several public beaches that make the Vineyard the summer hub it is today. The popular South Beach in Edgartown is has both a placid salt water pond and a long sandy beach with rolling surf. Town Beach in Oak Bluffs is located right next to the ferry dock, allowing you to save time by immediately collapsing on the sandy shores right after arriving. There, you can watch the boats sail by and the ferries come into shore. Joseph Sylvia State Beach extends between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. It’s a public beach where you can rent kayaks and paddleboards and enjoy the calm waters, or maybe you’re bold enough to the plunge and jump off the famous Jaws bridge. If you feel like adventuring upisland to Moshup Beach, you can expect big waves with fun surf. The sandy spot also provides beautiful views of the multi-colored clay cliffs of Aquinnah. Just be sure to bring cash for parking ($5-$20).

There are five lighthouses on island, each of which has a rich history and reflect the personality of the town they are located in. An island favorite is the Edgartown Lighthouse. You can walk down to Lighthouse Beach to dip your toes in the ocean and watch the boats in the harbor come and go. Over on the western side of the island you can visit the Aquinnah Lighthouse. This lighthouse is perched above the colorful clay cliffs, and is so close to the precipice it was actually moved back to a safer location in 2015!

Water Activities

Fishing, windsurfing, and parasailing are some of the popular sports you can try in the Martha’s Vineyard, and it’s easy to rent the necessary equipment and training for such activities. Charters are also popular on the island, both fishing and recreational. Several outlets offer deep sea fishing, or right off the coast of the island – depending on what you’re interested in. If sailing is more your speed, you can catch a cruise around the Edgartown Harbor on the eye-catching Catboat Charters sailboat the Tigress (complete with American Flag decorated sails!)

And finally, here are few things we just love too much not to share…!

Biplane rides at the Katama Airfield- Get a whole new perspective of the island with a biplane ride with Classic Aviators. Different rides are offered based on how much of the island you want to see and if you want to do any flips! (Gulp!)

Gingerbread Cottages at the Campground- the famous campground located in the Oak Bluffs is home to a collection of teeny-tiny Victorian style cottages all grouped together. With all the bright colors and decorative porches, ones half expects your favorite storybook character to casually stroll out of one of the small houses!

Farm Tours at The Grey Barn- The Grey Barn is a working farm located Up-Island in Chilmark and is home to Dutch Milking cows and Berkshire Pigs. The organic farmstand is open from 7 am to 5 pm daily (where you can stock up on the best of the island’s meats, cheeses and fresh milk- their Prufrock cheese is legendary).

Riding the Shining Sea Bikeway

Riding the Shining Sea Bikeway this Summer

One of the best things you can do while on Cape Cod is to rent a bicycle and ride the Cape Cod Shining Sea Bikeway, a 10.7 mile ride that takes you in and out of woodland, around cranberry bogs, and along the sea coast. Gorgeous views of crystalline water, sightseeing cranberry harvests during the fall, and even spotting some wildlife while on your bike are all things you can encounter on your ride. The Boston Globe recently said, “One of the great things about biking on Cape Cod is the many wonderful places to ride: quiet back-country roads, dirt trails, and paths that go from your cottage to the beach.”

One of America’s first 500 rail trails, it was originally the rail bed for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company (no longer in service). Dive into the history of the bikeway by reading “A path through the natural history and cultural heritage of Falmouth on Cape Cod“.

Perfect field trip for the family, it is considered as nature’s classroom. Ride the bikeway and discover wooded area, ponds, saltwater marshes, and even swamps. Along with these natural settings, families will be entertained with nature’s creatures. For example, you’ll be able to watch wildlife in their natural environment, such as bluefish, Great Blue Herons, red-tailed hawks, osprey, turtles, red foxes, and deer. A learning opportunity for young and old, it’s a fantastic moment to connect with nature!

Since it’s the only bikeway on Cape Cod that rides along the seashore, it’s a great idea to take a ride on a sunny day when you’re visiting. If you need to rent bicycles, contact Corner Cycle Cape Cod or Art’s Bike Shop for more information or contact the Front Desk so we can make your bike reservation and have them delivered to the hotel at your convenience.

Introducing Red’s New Menu

Today, we are excited to introduce our new menu for the spring and summer 2015 season! Our Executive Chef Daniel Kenney and his culinary team have been hard at work creating and testing recipes that are bound to become family favorites this season. The goal of this menu is to showcase the freshest produce, grass-fed beef, local cheeses, and nearby seafood in the simplest ways. Our chefs have achieved incredibly flavorful recipes that we are sure you will enjoy! Start with our Chili & Soy Marinated Yellowfin Tuna Sashimi served with seaweed salad, cucumber carpaccio, and a black sesame tahini. The flavors are inspired by the clean ingredients and techniques of the Far East, with a hint of Middle Eastern influence from the tahini.

A night you won’t forget because you’ll be laughing all the way home! The Cape Cod Comedy Festival takes place April 11th and is the perfect excuse to get out of the house for an evening with friends and laughter.

About the Performers:

Tom Briscoe: After a ridiculous number of false starts in other careers – from billboard painter to national sales trainer to beer truck driver – he has gained the comedic fodder for his critically acclaimed and appropriately named 1 Man Show: So…I Got Fired From THAT Job!

Hilarious slants and rants on trying to be a manly-man in a girly-girl house with his wife, two daughters and a spoiled little dog keeps audiences laughing and his career flourishing. If he’s not at one of his home-town comedy clubs in New York, he can be seen headlining shows nationwide, performing at corporate events and on cruise ships worldwide. His travels have brought him to over ninety countries and he is allowed back into seventy-three. He can be heard on XM Radio and seen on The Comedy Channel in Canada. He also regularly performs in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The Tom Briscoe Comedy Show is hilarious, original stand up comedy from One Of The Best.

World Gone Crazy: World Gone Crazy rocks today’s news for laughs! Launched 5 years ago for lovers of stand-up comedy and live rock & roll song parodies – there is simply no other live show like World Gone Crazy…period! Now one part original (Gary “Stickyfoot” Michaels), 2 parts inevitable (Will E. Focker & Joe Long) and one part adorable (Monica Saviolakis) – it’s loyal following continues to grow as it tours resorts, casinos, spe- cial events and fundraisers.

What is the World Gone Crazy Comedy Band (or a comedy band in general for that reason?) This side splitting show skewers today’s current events and issues with rapid fire song parodies, stand-up comedy, hysterical impressions, audience interaction and commercial spoofs all performed by a live band. Think of it as a rock & roll version of Capital Steps or a comedic version of Bare Naked Ladies! If you love live mu- sic, stand-up comedy and therapy ALL performed by 4 extremely funny comedic personalities World Gone Crazy is the show for you! Special guests and stand up comedians all tend to show up on World Gone Crazy’s stage – you never know who will join the party!

Al Park: Al Park has quickly emerged as a rising talent on the national comedy scene. He recently won both the 2014 Boston Comedy Festival and the 2014 Cleveland Comedy Festival. In 2013 he was the Comic-in- Residence at the legendary Comedy Studio in Cambridge, MA, and won the annual Summer Showdown Comedy Contest at the Rhode Island Comedy Connection. Additionally he has been a featured performer at the Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival and North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. Supporting the West Falmouth Library

” Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.” – Vera Nazarian

This past January 22nd we had the pleasure to present the West Falmouth Library with a check to aid in their library needs. This check, for the amount of $2,000, was sourced from proceeds of our New Year’s Eve Party at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel.  Our very own Clark GuinnRegional Director of Operations of Scout Hotels, hand delivered the check to the library on a sunny January day.

Supporting the West Falmouth Library

The vision of the West Falmouth Library is: “A thriving library that is an integral part of the lives of the community” – and one we agree with 100%. Talking to Clark as we walked into the library, you could sense that books meant the world to him and as Regional Director of Operations for Scout Hotels, he wanted to make sure that the Sea Crest Beach Hotel was giving back and supporting its local community.

Supporting the West Falmouth Library

The West Falmouth Library’s focus of mission is rooted in its history as a local library and community meeting place in the village of West Falmouth. Throughout its history it has served the village and the greater Falmouth community with library services and educational, informational and entertaining events. We are so very proud to have this outstanding library in our area, for it not only provides books to individuals, but a personal sanctuary to those in need of peace and quiet.

Supporting the West Falmouth Library

Clark spoke fondly of books, remembering how in the past books would always elevate his mood, create an escape for when times were tough, or just guided him during personal times. A man that reads countless books a year, Clark talked about how he has educated his children and family on the importance of reading and making time to read, no matter how busy you are. Because we know that next to the word “busy” in the dictionary, Mr. Guinn’s photo is shown, thus his stance on making time to read, no matter what.

Supporting the West Falmouth Library

We hope that the next time you visit Sea Crest Beach Hotel, you’ll make time to stop by the West Falmouth Library. It’s the perfect place for rainy day activities, quiet time with kids, and in general, the perfect space to treat yourself to a good book. You can check out their annual events, as well their library services. Leave a comment below letting us know what you’re currently reading!
